What Is a Beam Roll Forming Machine?

A beam roll forming machine is a machine that takes a strip of metal and shapes it into a shape.beam roll forming machine It can take many forms and can be used to create both open and closed (tubular) sections. The process works by passing the metal through a series of rollers that incrementally bend it into the final shape. This can minimize strain localization, compensating for springback and achieving precise geometry. The process is ideal for advanced high-strength steels because it can form complex shapes from these grades without requiring additional material or creating excessive stresses.

The most basic version of a beam forming machine consists of four parts. The first is the entry section, where the metal is inserted in sheet form or fed from a continuous coil. Then, the material goes through the station rollers, which are positioned to perform the actual bending deformation. This can produce a wide range of different cross-sections, from straight to complex and curved.

Once the workpiece has been shaped by the station rollers, it passes through a cutting system that cuts the metal to a specified length. This can be done with a cutting die, but it is also possible to use a flying cut-off technique that allows the machine to continue working while cutting to reduce production time.

Finally, the completed workpiece exits the machine onto a conveyor or table where a worker retrieves it. The finished product can then be welded, trimmed, or painted, depending on the application. Today’s machine designs incorporate CAD/CAM systems to optimize the functionality of the machinery and to improve accuracy. These computer-controlled programs are designed to monitor and control the workpiece as it moves through the process, catching imperfections and minimizing damage and waste.

In addition to reducing the number of steps required for production, the system can also help reduce the overall weight of the final part. This is particularly important for advanced high-strength steels, which can have lower tensile strength and higher thickness than mild steel. The forming pressure can also be higher for these materials, due to their lower elongation. Therefore, the forming forces on the rollers and frames of the machine need to be adjusted accordingly. Other adjustments can include using smaller radii for the profile bends and pre-punching holes and notches, which reduce the amount of material needed for the finished product.
